Paper 2 - Peter Wittenburg, DoBeS (VC/Skype) : Language and Culture Documentation in DOBES

Abstract : Languages and cultures were always subject of changes due to a variety of factors. However, currently we observe a rate of change due to globalization and innovation which has never been occurred before. Changes often lead to the extinction of a language or cultural habitudes. The DOBES program has as its goal to document endangered languages and started in 2000. From that time on 49 multidisciplinary teams have been participating documenting more than 70 languages from all over the world based on a variety of audio/video recordings. The documentation work includes the creation of annotations (orthographic transcription, translation to a major language, morphosyntax), lexica, descriptions of sound systems, ethnographic studies, musicological studies, etc.). Some teams are also busy to create conceptual spaces where the major concepts of cultures are related to each other and where all concepts can be linked to the stored material such as audio/video fragments, images, photos, etc.

All created material is stored in the DOBES archive which is hosted at the Max Planck Institute which now has one of the largest online archives covering in total about 75 Terabyte data. All data objects are described by metadata which can be accessed to find useful resources. The archive material is dynamically replicated at two large computer centers with data preservation guarantees of 50 years.

My talk will describe the landscape of languages documented, discuss the long term preservation aspects, look at the advanced tools the teams are using, and demonstrate the use of the online archive.
